This month we are pleased to once again to have a lawyer from US Law Shield joining us. Knowing what to do after you have had to defend yourself is a vital part of our education.   TWAW Broomfield Shooting Chapter gives women of all experience levels the opportunity to be introduced to issues important to women shooters, learn safe gun handling skills and train together. TWAW Broomfield Chapter is being spearheaded by Julie Hofstetter and Charlene Strahs, local female gun enthusiasts. Events will be held on the 3rd Friday of every month and open to all women, 18 years or older. TWAW Shooting Chapter has partnered with Shoot Indoors Shooting Range to be the host range for these monthly events. Time will be devoted to discussion and topical study as well as time on the range learning and practicing safe gun handling skills at each monthly event. This indoor range will offer opportunities to learn and grow from trained instructors and staff. Member participants are required to pay the $15 range fee and complete a quick registration process if they have never shot at Shoot Indoors. The $15 range fee includes rentals but ammunition for rented range guns must be purchased from Shoot Indoors.  You can bring your own gun and ammunition but please make sure your gun is unloaded when you enter the building.  TWAW members are required to complete a safety orientation prior to shooting at Shoot Indoors.  If you have a CCW this requirement may be waived.  Please be sure to register for the orientation if you will be attending the class.  The class begins at 5:45 p.m.so plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior for check in. The Spleen and Splenectomy Procedures: Who, What, When, Why? with Dr. Nekesa Morey, BSc, BVM&S
StartJan 23
EndJan 23
Join Dr. Nekesa Morey, BSc, BVM&S, for her lecture:  "The Spleen and Splenectomy Procedures:  Who, What, When, Why?" The spleen is an intricate organ, visualized usually at the most ventral aspect of the abdomen with both AFAST and abdominal radiographs. Its structure is usually divided into the head, body and tail of the spleen, with various vessels connecting to the spleen before supplying the rest of the abdominal organs. Its primary function includes haematopoiesis, circulation and destruction of red blood cells as well as primary immunologic function. As it is directly connected to the circulation, it is a primary organ for the release of lymphocytes and monocytes, which increase antibody release to fight disease. As the animal continues to get older, the spleen can become more susceptible to the development of diseases directly to the organ. The most common biological insults include splenic torsion, splenomegaly and splenic masses. Usually, depending on the clinical scenario that arises, a splenectomy can be performed to remove the spleen. This is an organ that an animal can live without, and depending on the cause, most animals can continue to do well without their spleen. A splenectomy may be performed under emergency circumstances or in some instances can be an elective procedure. This lecture will go into further significant detail about the primary functions of the spleen, as well as any differences in structure and physiologic function between small mammals and humans. We will continue to describe the three diseases mentioned above, the more likely signalments we would expect in the veterinary world that could develop these diseases and therefore would warrant a splenectomy. We will continue to describe the procedure of a splenectomy itself and discuss medical management if a splenectomy is not opted for. Overall, this lecture should increase confidence in the approach to diseases involving the spleen, and increase awareness of its functions during disease.  Lunch will be provided One (1) hour CE - CACVT approval pending for Technicians Please arrive 15 minutes early to check-in. Attendees will need to enter the hospital at the south east entrance, just off of 43rd Ave and Kipling.
